Natal Holiday Weather Overview
Natal is an interesting city in northeast Brazil, known for its stunning beaches and for its off-season carnival, the Carnatal, held in November or December each year. As well as sand dune complexes such as Genipabu, Natal also has natural attractions for divers - the turquoise waters and coral formations of nearby Maracajau are a very popular diving spot.
If you tire of the beach life, Natal has several important museums and indoor attractions, and a number of historic monuments to explore.
Natal’s Climate
Natal has a hot and humid tropical climate, with little temperature variation through the year. It rains a great deal; this is a rainforest area, after all; but there is a “dry” season between September and January when the rainfall lessens. Cool trade winds blowing in off the coast help to keep temperatures bearable, but high humidity can make the air feel sticky.
Natal in Winter
Natal is very busy during the winter period, as crowds flock to the Carnatal celebrations. December also sees a lot of Christmas related events.
If you visit Natal in the winter, you can expect average daily highs of around 30°C, with overnight lows of 24°C. December, January and February are quite dry compared to summer and autumn, but you will still see some rain - on average, it rains for on about 6 days in December and January, and 9 days in February.
Take an umbrella for a winter visit to Natal, but don’t worry about waterproof clothing, you’ll feel too hot for that.
Natal in Spring
Spring is a popular time to visit Natal, especially during the Holy Week celebrations. Average daily highs reach 29°C, with overnight lows of 22°C. However, spring is one of the wettest periods of the year - in March, you can expect 8 inches of rain, rising to 10 inches in each of April and May.
It doesn’t rain all day, every day, however. It rains on roughly half of the days each month, but typically in short, torrential downpours or storms; the rest of the day will be warm and muggy but dry.
Again, take an umbrella with you, and perhaps waterproof shoes.
Natal in Summer
Summer is a wet period in Natal. Rainfall remains heavy throughout June, July and August, with July, the wettest month, seeing rain on approximately 17 days.
It is slightly cooler during this period, with average daily highs dipping to 27oc in the daytime, and 20°C overnight. Thunderstorms can be dramatic, and localised flooding can occur.
Natal in Autumn
Autumn is the driest time of year in Natal, and tends therefore to be the most popular time to visit. September sees a little rain, but October and November are almost dry. Temperatures recover at this time too, with average daily highs of 30°C and overnight lows of 24°C.
Expect the beaches to be busy, however, as everyone arrives to take advantage of the drier weather.
