Guangzhou Holiday Weather Overview

Guangzhou is the capital city of the Guangdong Province and is also the largest city within the province.

It can be found on either side of the banks of the Pearl River to the north of both Macau and Hong Kong which makes the city not only a key trading hub for China but also a key transportation centre.

Best food and places to eat in Guangzhou

There are lots of places to eat in Guangzhou and as it is such a hub for trade there is a much wider variety of different cuisines than in other cities in China.

This being said there are still more restaurants that serve a variation on Chinese cooking than any other in the city. These include restaurants such as Wuu’s Restaurant, the Macau Street Restaurant, Chuan Guo Yan Yi, Jiumaojiu Noodle Restaurant and Lei Garden Restaurant.

If you are looking for something that is a little more western in flavour then there is Wilber’s, Chicken Express, Chez Max, Le Saint-Tropez French Restaurant & Bar and the Tavern Sports Bar that provide a wide variety of European and American cuisines in a mixture of atmospheres and at a wide range of prices.

Top hotels in Guangzhou

Guangzhou mainly specialises in hotels when it comes to accommodation in the city. There are many luxury hotels to choose from such as the Madarin Oriental, the Oakwood Premier, the Four Seasons, the Ritz-Carlton, the Shangri-La and the Ascott IFC.

There are also quite a few hotels to choose from that are somewhat more affordable such as the Guangdong Victory Hotel, the T-Hotel, the Guangdon Yingbin Hotel, the Sino Trade Centre Hotel and the Jovenstar Hotel.

Things to do and see in Guangzhou

When it comes to things to see in Guangzhou the Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street is one that should not be missed as not only is it one of the busiest commercial pedestrian streets in China it has some of the best restaurants and cafes in the city lining the sides of it.

The Pearl River that flows through the city of Guangzhou is lovely to watch during the day but the night tours down the river offer a view of the city that you would otherwise miss out on.

One of the most unique sites to visit whilst in Guangzhou is the former site of the Whampoa Military Academy; the Academy was destroyed during the Second Sino-Japanese War.

When is the best time to visit Guangzhou?

The best time to visit Guangzhou is during the spring and late autumn as though there is little change in the temperature and humidity it is much drier than visiting during the summer months and does not have the slight temperature dip that is experienced during the winter.

Guangzhou’s Climate

Guangzhou has a humid, subtropical monsoon climate, which means that it is hot and muggy all year round. The monsoon rains last from April to September, with the rest of the year being much drier but not completely dry.

Guangzhou in Spring

Guangzhou’s spring season is in February and March. Average daily highs range between 18 and 21°C with overnight lows of between 11 and 15°C. You’ll see rain on approximately 10 days a month, and humidity is high. Nansha Huangshanlu Park and Donghu Park are two of the best places to view cherry blossom and other flowers as spring gets underway.

Take layered clothing and an umbrella if you’re visiting Guangzhou in spring.

Guangzhou in Summer

Guangzhou’s long summer lasts from April until September. Average daily highs start at 25°C in April, peaking at around 32°C in August. Night temperatures are warm and sticky, at up to 25°C. This is the wettest time in Guangzhou, with May being the wettest month - around 11 inches of rain.

The monsoon doesn’t bring rain all day every day, however. Although most days will see some rain, it comes in sharp downpours which clear quickly, often accompanied by ferocious thunderstorms.

To escape from the heat, try some watersports at the beautiful Chimelong Water Park, or leave the city and head to scenic Baiyun mountain where the air will be cooler.

If you’re visiting Guangzhou in the summer, bring waterproof shoes and many changes of lightweight clothing. Air quality in the city can be poor and hazy, so you might also want to consider a mask.

Guangzhou in Autumn

Autumn is a very busy time in Guangzhou with many conferences and trade fairs. The weather is mostly sunny and much cooler, with occasional rain. Expect average daily highs of 28°C in October, falling to 22°C in November. This is the perfect season for exploring Yuexui Park and White Cloud Mountain, or for shopping in Guangzhou’s many upscale shopping areas.

Bring something with long sleeves for the cooler evenings, plus a waterproof jacket.

Guangzhou in Winter

December and January are the short winter period in Guangzhou, and it can become chilly at this time. Average daily highs of 18°C in the day give way to cooler nights at around 10°C. If you’re visiting Guangzhou in the winter, bring a sweater and some layered clothes, but leave the umbrella at home - this is the driest time of year.

What to pack and wear in Guangzhou?

Light clothing is advisable almost all year round save for during the winter but equally carrying a waterproof coat during the monsoon season is essential. Due to the high risk of thunderstorms umbrellas are something that should not be carried. If you are visiting during the winter months the weather is quite cold so warm and thick clothing for wearing both inside and outside is recommended.

Best months to visit Guangzhou?

February and March are the best month to go for holiday or travel to Guangzhou. The weather averages gathered from Guangzhou weather forecast and Guangzhou weather history also forecast these months temperature to be around 21°c and average of 107.8 hours of sunshine in a month.
