Amathus Bay Holiday Weather Overview
Amathus Bay is a small resort on the southern coast of Cyprus, close to Limassol. It offers the usual Mediterranean resort facilities, and benefits from the glorious Cyprus weather - but this resort also has a secret. On the outskirts of the town lie the ancient ruins of Amathus, one of the most important ancient cities of Cyprus and home to the cult of Aphrodite.
Most visitors to Amathus Bay come for its golden beaches, but the ancient history of the area is an attraction in its own right, and offers year-round interest, whatever the weather.
Amathus Bay Climate
Amathus Bay has a Mediterranean-subtropical climate, characterised by very long, hot summers and short, mild winters. Spring and autumn are both pleasant seasons, although the weather in spring and summer is more unpredictable than the rest of the year, bringing thunderstorms and possible sandstorms too.
Ancient Explorations
To make the most of the ancient city of Amathus, and other nearby archaeological sites, you'll want to visit Amathus Bay when it's not too hot. March, April and May are ideal for this. Daily highs of between 20 and 26 Celsius mean plenty of sunshine but no stifling heat, while overnight lows of between 10 and 17°C are also pleasant.
If you're visiting Amathus Bay during these spring months, bring layered clothing for the cooler nights, and sunscreen and a hat for the warmer days. Heat waves can push the temperatures up into the 30s Celsius even at this time of year, so come prepared with a variety of lightweight clothing.
October is another good month for archaeological explorations. It's quite dry, apart from the occasional thunderstorm, and temperatures in October can reach 27°C - hotter than some would like for hiking and exploring, but fine if you're happy with heat.
Sun, Sand and Sea
If your main reason for visiting Amathus Bay is for a traditional summer beach holiday, then you'll probably want to visit during the summer months.
During June, July and August, average daily highs of 30-31°C certainly turn up the sizzle factor - and at times, the mercury can be closer to 38 or 39 Celsius. Nights are not stifling, however, with temperatures falling back to around 20°C, and it's a very dry heat as there is virtually no rain at all in Amathus Bay during the summer.
It's perfect beach weather if you like your summers hot - bring plenty of sunscreen and a hat, and drink lots of water. Be aware, however, that this is peak season in Amathus Bay and the resort will be crowded.
Autumn and Winter in Amathus Bay
November to February is low season in Amathus Bay, but it's still a very pleasant place to visit. Winters are very mild - daily highs in January can still reach 18°C or higher, and nights rarely fall below 8°C. If you're visiting Amathus Bay in the winter months, pack a shawl or cover-up for the evenings, and some layered clothing. Bring an umbrella too, as it can be rather rainy at this time.
