Dresden Holiday Weather Overview
Dresden, a German city situated near the Czech border, is a city synonymous with regeneration. Once the cultural and artistic heart of Germany, its baroque old centre was obliterated by bombing raids in World War II, in what has become one of the most controversial incidents of the war. Today, Dresden is once again a beautiful city and a hub for culture, music and the arts. Visitors flock to the city all year round, to marvel at its regeneration and to visit its many points of interest.
Dresden's Climate
Despite its landlocked location, Dresden officially has an oceanic climate, which brings it warm summers and quite cold winters.
The weather is never extreme or disruptive, however, so you can plan a visit to Dresden to coincide with your interests at any time of the year.
Dresden in the Spring
Spring is a popular time to visit Dresden, as the city's parks and green spaces are at their best in this season. There are also lots of cultural events going on, but the city is busy with business conventions and trade exhibitions too, so it can be crowded.
A chilly March has highs of only around 8°C, with overnight lows just above freezing, but the city warms up rapidly and by May the daily highs reach into the low 20s Celsius. Dresden's rainfall is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year, so you may catch a few rainy days in the spring - pack an umbrella to be on the safe side.
Dresden in the Summer
June, July and August are peak times for tourism in Dresden, so this is the most expensive time of year to visit the city. The three day Bunte Republik Neustadt festival in June brings the city to life, and throughout the rest of the summer there are numerous festivals and events for visitors to enjoy.
Dresden's summers are warm but not usually hot. Average summer highs are around 21-23°C, which is very pleasant. Occasionally temperatures can nudge above 30 Celsius, but most of the time the heat is not at all unbearable. Overnight lows of 14°C are pleasantly refreshing too, so expect temperate summer weather.
Summer is, however, the wettest of Dresden's seasons, with July and August each receiving around 3 inches of rain - take an umbrella and some lightweight layered clothing if you're visiting Dresden in the summer.
Dresden in the Autumn
The Elbe meadows can be glorious in the autumn, and this is a picturesque time of year to visit the city. Mornings can be misty and the temperatures are cool, with average daily highs of 13°C in October and 7 in November. Autumn nights are chilly in Dresden with temperatures of around 3-4°C, so bring a sweater or coat and something with long sleeves.
Dresden in the Winter
Dresden plays host to Germany's oldest Christmas Market, and indeed the entire city does Christmas on a large scale, so December is a very popular time to visit. If you're visiting Dresden in the winter, wrap up warm - daily highs over at around 2-3°C throughout the season, with typical overnight lows of around -4°C. Record lows of -25°C have been recorded, though, so don't forget your hat and gloves!
