Alexandria is the second largest city in Egypt and can be found along the Mediterranean Sea in the north central part of Egypt. Alexandria is also Egypt’s largest seaport with around 80% of Egypt’s imports and exports passing through the port.

Alexandria is also an important industrial centre due to the natural gas and oil pipelines to the city from Suez. Alexandria was founded by Alexander the Great in 331BC and Lake Mariut can be found on the southern side of the city.

As Alexandria is on the Mediterranean Sea there are some fantastic choices of Mediterranean cuisine on offer as well as some excellent seafood restaurants.

For those who are wishing to enjoy the culinary delights of the med there are restaurants such as the Balbaa Village, the Hosny, the Samakmak, the Byblos Restaurant, the Santa Lucia Restaurant and the Mohamed Ahmed Restaurant that all offer a variety of Egyptian and Mediterranean cooking that come with excellent service and atmospheres to match the food on offer.

If you are looking to try the local seafood then the Le Prince Seafood Restaurant, Ibn Hamido, the 7Seas, the Tikka Grill and the Rakoda all offer a wide variety of different dining options that all offer excellent food.

Though Alexandria is a large and sprawling city there are some very limited options when it comes to accommodation. There quite a few hotels as well as motels and inns to choose from in the city but very limited villa and apartment options.

Things to do and see in Alexandria

Though the Great Library of Alexandria may have been lost long ago there is still plenty to see in Alexandria. Though it isn’t quite the whole collection of knowledge from the ancient world there is the Bibliotheca Alexandrina that can be visited and it does have an impressive range of books housed within it and is located very close to the site of the destroyed ancient library.

If instead you are looking for something that is more visually appealing then there are places such as the Montazah Palace Gardens, the Mosque of Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi, the Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, the St, Mina Monastery, Corniche and the Alexandria National Museum that all provide cultural and natural insight into Alexandria.

For a more historical look at Alexandria there is the Roman Amphitheatre, the El-Salamlek Palace, the King Farouk Palace and Fort Qaitbey.

When is the best month to visit Alexandria?

There is no ideal holiday period for Alexandria as the dry climate and warm temperatures mean that it is pleasant to visit all year round. During the summer months Alexandria is cooler than other areas of Egypt and therefore is a very popular holiday destination. If you want to avoid the crowds then it is best to avoid Alexandria during July and August.

Alexandria has a temperate climate with the overall weather being very mild. The weather is often extremely hot during the day time with temperatures dipping to much cooler levels at night.
