Wimbledon Holiday Weather Overview

Wimbledon is one of the most well known and prestigious tennis tournaments in the world. It takes place over 14 days on grass courts (the only grand slam event played on grass).

The Championships have been held at the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon since the year 1877, making it one of the oldest tennis tournaments globally. At its beginning, Wimbledon consisted of just 22 male players. It has since grown to include female players and doubles matches.

The Wimbledon Championships are made up of 5 different tournaments: Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. There are 128 players in each of the tournaments, except for the mixed doubles tournament which consists of 96 players.

Wimbledon is thought of as a quintessentially British tradition, summoning images of tennis players dressed all in white, Pimms and most importantly, strawberries and cream.

The Championships are visited by over 500,000 people over the 14 day period, all looking to get in on the action.

If you’re planning on attending The Championships this year, check out our Wimbledon weather forecast and recommendations on what to take!

Wimbledon Weather Averages

Wimbledon usually takes place in June or July. July is the hottest month of the year on average, ideal for watching tennis. Average temperatures tend to reach around 16 degrees celsius in June and around 18 degrees celsius in July.

Whilst the temperature is generally mild for the tennis tournament, rainfall is still relatively common. There are around 12-14 days of rain per month during June and July meaning you can expect at least a few wet days over the 2 week period.

June and July have the most hours of sunlight however, so when the sun is shining, there is plenty of time to enjoy it!

What to Pack if it Rains

Set over 14 days, most people will not attend every day of the Championships. The weather is likely to vary quite a lot over this time so make sure to check the Wimbledon weather forecast for your chosen days before packing.

Most of Wimbledon is hosted outdoors; only Centre Court and No.1 Court are equipped with retractable roofs should it rain. If it rains you may find that matches on some of the other courts may be cancelled so there could be a fair amount of waiting around. Make sure to pack a warm jumper and a waterproof coat to ensure you don’t get wet. It would also be a good idea to take an umbrella with you.

Wimbledon does not have a strict dress code however visitors are expected not to wear dirty trainers, shorts or ripped jeans so make sure to take with you some smart trainers. If you are lucky enough to have tickets to center court, the dress code tends to be more formal and with the retractable roof option you may be safe from the rain. It is still a good idea to take a jumper or rain jacket with you however in case it gets chilly or you want to walk around the surrounding area.

What to Pack if it’s Sunny

Sunshine is what we all hope for for Wimbledon. It prevents delays in matches and is the perfect accompaniment to strawberries and cream.

If the sun is due to shine on the days you are visiting Wimbledon make sure to take a hat with you. You will be sat outside for long periods of time so protecting yourself from the sun is essential. You should also take sun cream and bottled water with you.

Dressing smartly is encouraged at Wimbledon so even if it’s sunny, make sure to dress accordingly. Think summer dresses and light shirts. Crop tops and shorts are likely to be frowned upon, even if the weather is scorching.

Even if you don’t have tickets to any of the matches in The Championships, Wimbledon is a great place to visit when the tournament is on. Why not take a picnic and soak up the atmosphere on Henman Hill? It has a large screen so you can watch all the action from right outside!
