Agra Holiday Weather Overview

Agra is one of the most visited cities in India. It is of course famous as the home of the Taj Mahal, but it also has two other UNESCO World Heritage sites - Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri - and a large number of other historic and cultural sites of interest.

Agra forms part of the so-called golden triangle of Indian tourism, along with Delhi and Jaipur, and the city can become very crowded at peak tourist times. Nonetheless, it retains much of its historical splendour, and the city also boasts some of the most beautiful parks and garden in the country.

Almost in the heart of the city lies the history's greatest love-tomb and India's most architecturally marvelous structure - the Taj Mahal. Constructed under the order of Emperor Shah Jahan between 1631 and 1648, this majestic mausoleum was built in memory of his most beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

Nevertheless, there are several other intriguing structures that are not too be missed. Agra Fort, Sikandra (Tomb of Akbar), Itmad-Ud-Daulah's Tomb and the Balkeshwar Temple are some of the sightseeing opportunities available for visitors. Agra is best visited via daytrips from New Delhi. However, staying in the city for several days certainly wouldn't disappoint.

When is the best month to visit Agra?

The monsoon season (July to August) should be avoided altogether. Flooding plagues the city of Agra during this time, making for an uncomfortable and difficult experience. The weather in Agra is most pleasant during the months of October, November and February. Temperatures average to about 27?C during these periods. The winter months of December and January should also be avoided, as the city experiences heavy fog, making visibility poor for tourists.

Agra’s Climate

Agra has a semi-arid climate, with very hot summers, mild winters and a monsoon season. The city is one of the hottest in India, and has very high humidity levels too, which can make for an uncomfortable visit at certain times of the year.

Agra in Summer

Summer in Agra extends from March to June, with June overlapping with the monsoon period.

Expect very high temperatures if you visit Agra in the summer. Daily highs range from 32°C in March to 41°C in June, but these are averages and the temperature is often much higher than that - the record is closer to 50°C. Overnight lows in March are bearable at around 16°C, but as summer progresses nights get hotter. By the time you reach June, overnight lows rarely dip below 28°C, which can make it difficult to sleep.

Towards the end of June, pre-monsoon showers start to increase, and come as a welcome relief from the heat.

Because of the extremely hot conditions, most tourists avoid Agra during the summer months. If you do visit, try to stay out of the midday sun, and be sure to drink plenty of water. It will take you some time to acclimatise if you are not used to this level of heat, so factor that into your journey planning.

Agra’s Monsoon

The monsoon period in Agra is between June and September, with July and August seeing the brunt of the rain. Monsoon rains can be extremely heavy, and flooding is common.

Temperatures decrease slightly during the monsoon period, so expect average daily highs of around 35°C, with overnight lows of 25°C.

Thunderstorms, dust storms and torrential rain occur on most days during this period. It’s important to note that the rain comes in short downpours rather than in steady rain which lasts all day so it’s still possible to visit Agra at this time, if you wish. Take a waterproof jacket or umbrella, and waterproof shoes, and be prepared to be flexible about local travel arrangements if there is flooding.

Agra in Winter

Winter is the most popular for tourism in Agra, between October and February. Rain decreases sharply in October, and then there is very little rainfall for the rest of the dry period. Daily highs fall back to around 22°C in January, at their lowest point. This is still pleasantly warm, but Agra’s winter nights can be chilly, at around 8°C, so take layered clothing or a jacket for the winter nights.

Most days are clear and bright, although occasional fog blankets the city, but this provides excellent photo opportunities around the many famous landmarks.

What to pack and wear in Agra?

It is important to remember that the Taj Mahal is first and foremost a temple. Therefore, visitors wanting to enter the site must bring and wear conservative clothing. Also Agra weather remains generally hot all year round, so for sightseers, loose, sun-protecting clothing is recommended, including hats.

Best months to visit Agra?

January and December are the best month to go for holiday or travel to Agra. The weather averages gathered from Agra weather forecast and Agra weather history also forecast these months temperature to be around 21°c and average of 313.1333 hours of sunshine in a month.
