Florence Holiday Weather Overview

Known as the birthplace of the Renaissance, and thought by many to be the most beautiful city in Italy, Florence is a city with a fascinating history and a strong cultural history. Florence is the capital of Tuscany and its historic centre, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracts millions of visitors each year.

Florence, situated in Italy's Tuscany, boasts culture, good weather and amazing food. The city is extremely picturesque and home to some wonderful well-intact historical buildings.

For lovers of fashion and art, Florence is a hugely important destination. Fans of medieval history are drawn here too, and the city’s architecture is breath-taking. Florence is definitely a must-see city for any modern traveller, and worthy of a place on any modern Grand Tour.

Florence has many attractions in the city centre which offer splendid views over this beautiful city. Two places not to miss include the Duomo and the Campanile. Both of these attractions are great starting points for touring the city.

Behind the charming Pitti Palace you will find the famous Boboli Gardens, which is a great place for walking and relaxing. The city centre is home to some amazing eateries, shops, hotels and bars as well, many of which have a wonderful atmosphere because of being in the historical centre. If you want places that are cheaper to eat, drink and stay at then you will need to stay outside of the centre.

When is the best month to visit Florence?

Spring time in Florence is a great time to visit because of the blooming flowers and the pleasant Florence weather. The best months during this season to visit are April and May. Those who enjoy hot and humid weather may wish to visit the city in the summer (June to September). The heat at this time can be escaped at night when it gets pleasantly cool.

Florence’s Climate

Florence’s situation in a river valley produces hot, humid, windless summers, but cool, wet winters. Occasional snow in the winter gives the city a magical air, while summers can be sweltering, and hotter than on the Tuscan coast.

Florence in Spring

Spring is a lovely time to visit Florence, as the city begins to come alive and the pavement cafes bustle. Before the summer crowds descend, you’ll face much shorter waits at Florence’s major attractions, and you might also get a better deal on a hotel.

Expect average highs of around 15°C in March, rising to a pleasant 23°C by the end of May. Spring nights can be cool, however, and in early spring you’ll want a jacket or shawl for the evenings. With spring showers common, you might also want to take an umbrella.

Florence in Summer

June, July and August are the peak tourist months in Florence, and the city can be packed. Note, however, that in August especially, most locals leave the city, which can mean a rather fake touristic experience.

If you’re visiting Florence in the summer, be prepared to swelter. Average daily highs range from 28-31°C but of course, since that’s an average, it can be much hotter at times. Summer evenings are a balmy 18°C on average, which is perfect for outdoor dining and romantic strolls. Summer in Florence is relatively dry, but if you do catch a shower it’s likely to be accompanied by thunder and lightning.

Florence in Autumn

September and October are mild in Florence, and these are popular months to visit, allowing you to make the most of the city without the heavy crowds of the summer. Daily highs of around 21-25°C are pleasant, but nights become chillier as the season progresses, so take some layered clothing.

Expect more showers as autumn develops too, and by November there will be many overcast and rainy days, with temperatures having fallen to approximately 14°C in the daytime and 5°C at night.

Florence in Winter

Florence’s winters are cool and wet. Between December and February you can expect daily highs of around 10-12°C, but nights often hover only just above freezing. There’s plenty of rain, so you’ll need a waterproof jacket or an umbrella if you want to enjoy Florence in the winter. Occasional snow can blanket the city, but it doesn’t usually last very long or cause disruption to travel.

What to pack and wear in Florence?

As the seasons in this climate vary, it is advisable to come prepared. Summer weather in Florence requires lightweight t-shirts, skirts and shorts. Sometimes there are small rain storms but this is a rare occurrence. During the autumn, winter and spring, it is advisable to pack some warm clothes and a rain coat, particularly for the rain that comes in autumn.

Best months to visit Florence?

May and September are the best month to go for holiday or travel to Florence. The weather averages gathered from Florence weather forecast and Florence weather history also forecast these months temperature to be around 22°c and average of 214.3333 hours of sunshine in a month.
