Kumamoto Holiday Weather Overview
Kumamoto is a historic city on the Japanese island of Kyushu. It is best known for its extremely well preserved castle, and there are also some beautiful Japanese gardens in the city. With lots of shopping opportunities, shrines, museums and theatres, there is plenty in Kumamoto to keep visitors interested, whatever time of year they visit.
Kumamoto’s Climate
Kumamoto has a subtropical climate, with plenty of rain, hot summers and chilly winters. Rainfall is at its heaviest by far in June and July.
Kumamoto in Winter
Kumamoto’s winters are cool and wet. Average daily highs reach 12-13°C between December and February, but nights are much colder, often barely above freezing. There are several inches of rain in each of the winter months, and on average it will rain on around 8 days in each month.
If you’re visiting Kumamoto in the winter, take some warm clothing, and a good waterproof jacket. An umbrella might also be useful. Be aware that much of the city closes down for several days either side of the New Year period, so be prepared to be flexible if you are travelling at that time.
Kumamoto in Spring
Spring is a delight in Kumamoto. In March, average daily highs are around 15°C and the cherry blossoms are emerging. Kumamoto castle is a favourite hanami (cherry blossom viewing) spot, with more than 1000 trees planted around it.
As spring progresses, temperatures rise. In April, average daily highs are 21oc, rising to 25°C in May. Overnight lows are in the mid teens Celsius by the end of May, but nights early in March may still be chilly. Take layered clothing if you’re visiting Kumamoto in spring, to be sure of adapting to changing temperatures.
Kumamoto in Summer
Summers are hot and wet in Kumamoto. June sees average temperatures of 28°C - rising to 33°C in August - but these are averages, and it is often hotter than this. Highs in the high 30s Celsius are not unknown, with stifling nights of 24°C.
June and July and by far the wettest months of the year, with a torrential 16 inches of rain apiece. During these months, it rains on about half of the days, often in huge, sudden downpours and thunderstorms. The heat and humidity can make for an uncomfortable stay. If you do visit Kumamoto in the summer, take waterproof shoes and a waterproof poncho.
Kumamoto in Autumn
Autumn can be a very pleasant time to visit Kumamoto as the autumn foliage changes colour, and the rain eases. September is still very warm, with daily highs of 29oc, but this will have fallen to 18°C by November. Take an umbrella, however, as you are still likely to catch some showers.
