Peshawar Holiday Weather Overview
Peshawar is an ancient city in Pakistan which lies close to the Khyber Pass - and as such, is a both strategically important and subject to unrest. Because of the perceived dangers, it is not a common tourist destination. However, the city does have much to offer and the sensible tourist will find it a welcoming and cultured destination.
Peshawar's Climate
Peshawar's climate is very dry, with little rainfall. It can rain at any time of the year but the rain does not last long. As well as being arid, the climate is extremely hot in the summer but slightly cooler in the winter months. There is no monsoon period. Throughout the year, temperatures fall dramatically at night, sometimes by as much as 20°C.
Peshawar in the Winter
Most visitors to Peshawar choose to go during the winter months, when the temperatures are less extreme. Average daily highs in December are 20°C, falling to 18°C in January. Winter nights are very cold, however, with overnight lows of around 4°C and temperatures below freezing not uncommon.
It does rain a little in the winter, but usually in short showers rather than prolonged rain.
If you're visiting Peshawar in the winter, take lightweight clothing for the daytime, and heavier clothing for the evenings. Remember the dramatic temperature difference between day and night, and check whether your accommodation will have heating or not - many hotels do not.
Winter is the most comfortable season for exploring Peshawar's history and culture, and for trips to the Khyber Pass. Note, however, that you cannot access the pass without permission from the authorities and you must have an armed guard. The security situation changes frequently and you should follow advice from your government on visiting the often dangerous tribal areas around Peshawar.
Peshawar in the Summer
Summers in Peshawar can be stifling. Average highs range from 35-40°C but temperatures in the mid to high 40s Celsius are not uncommon. Again, there is a dramatic fall in temperatures overnight, with lows of around 21-25°C. It's a dry heat, however, so it is not as uncomfortable as it would be with high humidity.
Most visitors avoid Peshawar during the summer months as the heat makes it difficult to move around and to enjoy the city. If you do visit in the summer, take only lightweight clothing, a hat and plenty of sunscreen.
Bear in mind that cultural sensitivities are high in Peshawar and that women are advised to dress modestly at all times. Long sleeved clothing and long trousers will protect your skin from the worst of the sun in any case.
It's also important to drink plenty of water if you are visiting Peshawar in the summer, so that you can stay hydrated - and try to stay out of the midday sun.
